This Is Not Who We Are

My fellow Americans,

The United States is a nation of laws. It is what keeps us a civilized society and is also responsible for US being the envy of the world. The foundation of our laws come from moral, historical, and logical points of view. They are made with the sole purpose to make sure everyone is treated fairly and treated with a sense of dignity even to those that are not citizens.

When people come to this country from other places, they do so because they were lead to believe that America has something for them that they desperately need or want. This hope could come in the form of a new opportunity, a fresh start, or even asylum. Where would potential citizens get this idea? Two glaring examples come to mind.

The first is from one of this nation’s greatest communicators. He understood that protecting the border was important, but he also stated that “if there had to be city walls, the walls had doors and the doors were open to anyone with the will and the heart to get here.” Being from Irish, English, and Scottish heritage, Ronald Raegan understood that the road for the immigrant was not an easy one to get to the United States. It took a toughness and a change in mindset that we have always appreciated in this country. He understood that, yes, immigration policy was meant to set a responsible path to citizenship, but it was never meant to…
